Sport Mouthguards at Your Dentistree

Sport Mouthguards at Your Dentistree

Sport mouthguards are vital to protecting the teeth and gums. Aussies are active in sports and life and while this is great it does mean the risk of a dental injury goes up. Whenever there’s contact to the face, unfortunately teeth are in imminent danger. Injury prevention is the primary reason for wearing a sport mouthguard. The material reduces the force of impact, and protects your teeth and gums.

What is a Sport Mouthguard?

Sport mouthguards are a thick and often spongy protective layer that cover the gums and teeth to prevent any injury. Commonly worn during high impact sports or activities with high risk of facial injury.

Risk factors when playing sport

The Australian Dental Association (ADA) report around one third of all traumatic injuries in sport are teeth related. Injuries can include chipped or broken teeth, soft tissue trauma of the mouth, gums and lips or jaw fractures.

The good news is, at Your Dentistree we can prevent these injuries. We create a custom-fitted
sport mouthguard to protect the gums and teeth.

How to care for a Sport Mouthguard?

After use simply rinse with warm soapy water and allow to air dry. Alternatively, you can occasionally use a mouthwash to disinfect the mouthguard.

How often should a Sport mouthguard be reassessed?

With children’s growth and any new teeth, the mouthguards may need to be replaced every 12 to 18 months. It’s important to regularly check the fit to maintain maximum protection. It’s also important to bring the mouthguard to your regular six-monthly appointment for inspection. Given the availability of an on-site dental laboratory at our Cheltenham dental practice, a new mouthguard can always be made very quickly.
