What are Crowns?
Crowns are a custom-made “cap” your dentist places over the tooth to restore the shape or enhance cosmetic appearance. They commonly fit over a fractured or damaged tooth.
Crowns help with:
- Supporting weakened teeth – in circumstances where a large filling may have replaced a small amount of natural existing tooth, a crown can help preserve the remaining tooth structure
- Restoring damaged teeth – through reasons of injury or decay. Crowns can re-establish your natural tooth’s functionality and prevent further impairment
- Cosmetic – crowns can help improve the appearance of damaged or discoloured teeth
- Root canal therapy – after a root canal, the remaining tooth can become weaker and vulnerable to infection. Placing a crown over the natural tooth can help shield it from further damage
Crowns are commonly made of porcelain or zirconia material. This material reinforces and re-establishes the strength of a weak or broken tooth. At Your Dentistree we use a 3D scanner which is incredibly accurate, and doesn’t cause any gagging. We then use a state-of-the-art 3D printer to create a prototype for the finished product.
What is a bridge?
A bridge is typically made up of three crowns which are supported by the teeth either side of the gap. This is a great solution when the neighbouring teeth also require dental crowns.
When you visit us at Your Dentistree, before cementing a bridge, we carefully assess there are no obvious micro gaps which could compromise the long-term success of this replacement option.
