Fissure Sealants

Fissure Sealants

What are fissures?

Fissure sealants are used to cover the grooves which naturally occur on the biting surfaces of teeth (fissures). If the fissures are narrow and deep, food can be trapped. Consequently, a toothbrush may not properly clean the area.  The trapped food can attract bacteria which multiply within these grooves. As a result, a sticky coating called plaque is made. Plaque can eat into the tooth enamel and cause decay.

What are fissure sealants?

A thin coating that fills the fissures of the teeth. This coating protects the teeth from dental plaque and decay.

What is the process?

  1. The tooth is cleaned
  2. The liquid sealant is applied to the grooves
  3. A special bright light sets the sealant

Benefits of fissure sealants:

  • Prevents food trapping causing bacteria and cavities
  • Closes the gaps on the tooth chewing surfaces
  • Teeth become stronger
  • Painless and easy to apply

Do you still need to clean the teeth?

Yes, it’s very important to clean the teeth twice daily. Sealants do not require a change of diet or special home treatment.

What age should the fissure sealants be done?

It’s recommended the fissures be applied as soon as permanent teeth appear. This is usually between 11 and 14 years of age. Fissures may also be applied to baby teeth. Additionally, can be used to preserve healthy teeth in adults.

What increases the risk of tooth decay?

  • High sugar intake- decay causing bacteria thrive on sugar
  • Damaged teeth- chipped or cracked teeth allow access to bacteria
  • Poor dental hygiene- causes plaque build-up
  • Lack of flossing- increases decay on the surfaces between teeth

Who applies the dental sealants?

Our highly trained dental professionals include dentists and hygienist. The procedure is painless and quick.

Are they useful?

Absolutely, it’s a solution to significantly reduce the exposure to tooth decay. The special sealants are designed to withstand rigorous chewing and biting.
