Extractions at Your Dentistree

Extractions at Your Dentistree

Tooth extraction occurs for necessity or to prepare for a restoration such as an implant. The experienced team at our Cheltenham dental practice is always ready to discuss the various replacement options available in modern dentistry.

Reasons for a tooth extraction:

  • Infection or risk of infection
  • Teeth crowding in the jaw
  • Damage from trauma
  • Damage from tooth decay
  • Gum disease
  • Poor functionality
  • To improve appearance such as orthodontic treatment

Procedure of a tooth extraction:

During the procedure, we always ensure the tooth is completely numb prior to commencing and also have the option of sedation or sleep dentistry when requested. Once the anaesthetic has taken effect the dentist will gently remove the tooth. Furthermore, we use the latest materials to improve the healing process and ensure you have an option for implants further down the track.

Types of tooth extraction:

  • Simple extraction where the tooth is visibly seen in the mouth, and the tooth is gently loosened and removed
  • Surgical extraction where the tooth may have been broken at the gum line or not come through yet. A small incision may be made into the gum and is occasionally necessary to remove a small section of bone surrounding the tooth for the extraction

What to expect after the procedure:

As a result of the extraction some bleeding is expected after the procedure. Furthermore, you’ll be given soft padding to bite on to stop the bleeding. It’s important to avoid smoking or drinking alcohol for the first 24 hours after the procedure.

Additionally, it’s also best to not rinse or exercise after the extraction as this may disrupt the blood clot formed. Typical healing will take anywhere between one to two weeks. To assist with pain relief you may take some over the counter medication.
